The history of Rio Grande do Norte began around 8,000 BC, when its territory began to be occupied by hunter-gatherers. In the 15th century, the territory of Rio Grande do Norte was inhabited by Tupi Indians of the Potiguara ethnic group who occupied the coastal region, while the interior was occupied by Tapuia Indians who did not speak Tupi. From 1494 onwards, the territory corresponding to the present-day Rio Grande do Norte became part of the Portuguese possessions in South America and, with the establishment of the system of Hereditary Captaincies, became part of the Captaincy of Rio Grande. However, it continued to be explored by the French until the end of the 16th century, who extracted brazilwood. And, from 1634 to 1654, the territory was part of the Dutch colony of New Holland during the Dutch invasions of Brazil. At the beginning of the 19th century, the then Province of Rio Grande became known as the Province of Rio Grande do Norte and, during the transition from the 19th to the 20th century, the history of Rio Grande do Norte was marked by the dispute with Ceará over the important salt mines of Mossoró.
