Why did it take about 150 years from the founding of the Polish state to the creation of the first chronicle describing the history of our lands? Who was its author - Gallus Anonymus? A Croat, or perhaps a Venetian? Did he really turn out to be one of the most outstanding literary representatives of the Christian world of the time? Chronicles begin to appear at a similar time in Polish, Czech and Ruthenian lands. What do we know about earlier descriptions of past events? What can we say about Widukind, Thietmar, Bruno of Querfurt? Could we call one of them a Pole-lover? Wincenty Kadłubek, the author of the Chronicle of Poland, represents a different era. How does his chronicle differ from the one written by the mysterious Anonymus? Does our idea of chroniclers as hunched, boney monks leaning over their lecterns have anything to do with who they really were? All this is discussed in the Polish History Museum Podcast from the series Other Histories of Poland. Cezary Korycki and his guest, Prof. Paweł Żmudzki from the Faculty of History at the University of Warsaw.
