In a two-part documentary we tell the history of Jewish Amsterdam. The focus is on the archaeological finds that were made at the places where the first Jewish residents lived from 1600 onwards. Jewish life mainly took place on the newly constructed islands of Vlooienburg, Uilenburg, Marken and Rapenburg. In recent decades, a lot of research has been done at these locations. Archaeologists uncovered cesspools and tunnel systems. Based on the finds, we now know more about the daily life, religion, work, poverty and prosperity of these first Jewish residents. At the beginning of the 20th century, the slums on these islands were uninhabitable and the houses were demolished. From next week, the two documentaries can be seen on AT5 on TV and online. The website also contains a lot of additional images and video material. AT5 Extra More videos from AT5. Want to watch more?
