The history of the Gaza Strip began long before its establishment in the 20th century. It is believed that the first modern humans arrived in the region corresponding to the present-day Gaza Strip around 6,000 years ago. Around 5,000 years ago, the first settlements were established in the region and, around 1,400 BC, during the Egyptian rule of the Levant, the city that would become the present-day Gaza began to develop. With the end of Egyptian rule around 1,200 BC, Gaza was conquered by the Philistines, who established Philistia in the region. Until the 1st century, Gaza was conquered by the Israelites, the Assyrians, the Babylonians, the Persians, the Greeks and the Romans. With the division of the Roman Empire in the 4th century, Gaza became part of the Byzantine Empire and, during this period, the city was converted to Christianity and managed to prosper even more. In the 7th century, the city was conquered by the Arabs and Gaza underwent a drastic change. Under the control of the Arab caliphates in the following centuries, Gaza was attacked by the Crusaders and the Mongols and, after passing through the hands of the Ayyubids and the Mamluks, was conquered by the Ottoman Empire. During the 14th century, Gaza experienced its last period of prosperity and, after the First World War, came under British rule. In 1949, one year after the creation of the State of Israel, the Gaza Strip was established and came under Egyptian rule. After that, this territory became the scene of numerous conflicts that continue to this day.
