The history of Amapá began approximately two thousand years ago, when the first humans arrived in the region. These people developed planting techniques that helped make this region one of the most populated in South America in the 15th century. With the division of South America between the Spanish and the Portuguese through the Treaty of Tordesillas, the territory of Amapá became part of the possessions of the Spanish Empire, until it was donated in 1637 by King Philip IV of Spain and III of Portugal to the then Governor of the State of Maranhão, Bento Maciel da Costa, and incorporated into the Captaincy of Grão-Pará. From that moment on, a territorial dispute developed between France and Portugal over the region of Amapá, which continued after Brazil's independence and ended only in 1900. In the 20th century, Amapá was separated from Pará and its economy was boosted by the discovery of manganese in its territory.
