In 2016, when Denis Masharov gave me permission to film these lectures, he said he would be very happy if I published them. For 5 years, I still haven't gotten around to sorting through the video archive and editing it. Unfortunately, Denis passed away on September 1, 2021. So that Denis's legacy doesn't disappear and he continues to charge and inspire many designers with his knowledge, I decided to fulfill my promise and publish video recordings of Denis's lectures on the history of font design and typography. This is the first part of (at least) four long lectures with hundreds of pictures that Denis gave in October 2016 at the St. Petersburg School for students of the font design course. In this video, Denis is just as bright, passionate and charismatic. This is how hundreds of students remember him, whom he inspired to love letters. This lecture on the origins of alphabets will be interesting and useful to absolutely everyone. Be sure to watch this video and share it with your students/beginners/continuing designers (past, present and future). I'm sure Denis would be very happy about it.
