This historical film of Palermo, the capital of the Sicilian Region, was shot by American soldiers in 1943. In these rare film sequences we see the terrible extent of the bombing of the old city. The Allied bombings caused serious damage to the city. Of the more than 200,000 homes destroyed, more than half were in the urban center of Palermo. Since 1940, some anti-aircraft positions had been set up on Mount Pellegrino. Mussolini asked Hitler for help in order to reinforce these defenses. A defensive network was then created around the city of Palermo, in addition to the existing fascist defenses, Pizzo Volo dell'Aquila, and along the entire coastal area of the city. From January 1941, British bombers based in Malta began to attack its port with increasing frequency. Between 1941 and 1942, numerous air raids by the Royal Air Force on the city of Palermo had attempted to interrupt the supplies that were being sent from Sicily to the German forces in Africa. In preparation for the Allied landing in Sicily, American and British bombers dropped bombs from February to July 1943 along the entire coastal area of the city. On July 22, Palermo was occupied by General Patton. This put an end to the Allied bombing, but the installations of the American-occupied city became a target for the German Luftwaffe, which carried out several raids in the following month. The last air attack on the port took place in August 1943. The research project TROLLEY MISSION 1945 includes historical aerial photographs and aerial photos of Germany. Italy is not part of the historical research of TROLLEY MISSION 1945, see https://www.trolley-mission.de - but during my research work in the military archives, I found this historical film that should not be hidden from the public.
