Do the Bundeswehr's weapons work as they should? And can anything be improved? This is what engineer Frank (40) is testing in the military technical department for information technology and electronics in Greding. In the so-called target simulation dome. This is a virtual environment for weapons tests. The advantage: it is much cheaper and more environmentally friendly to test weapons there first before conducting large-scale tests in the open field. In addition to existing weapons, Frank and his colleagues also test new weapons before they are purchased on a large scale by the Bundeswehr. His job is therefore directly linked to the two big concepts of turning point and procurement in the Bundeswehr. Frank is currently conducting tests on the "Leopard 2A4" tank. This model is known to be outdated. But so that Frank can also test new tanks in the future, he first wants to find out: What is actually possible with tanks? How can they be integrated into the target simulation dome and what tests can be carried out. On the day we were filming, the question was whether Frank can record what the gunner sees. He wanted to install a camera where the target shooter would normally stand. Frank is the cathedral's technical director. He is not a soldier, but a civil servant - and works as a civilian in the Bundeswehr. He not only tests weapons, but also goes to trade fairs, for example, to look at new equipment. Frank first finished secondary school and then obtained a university of applied sciences entrance qualification in 2002. In between, he trained as a technical assistant for IT. From 2002 to 2004, he volunteered for two years of military service, and that was where he first came into contact with the Bundeswehr. After his military service, he studied to become a graduate engineer in media technology in Nuremberg. Frank graduated from this course with a diploma. With the Bologna Process, the course no longer exists. It is now called "Media Engineering", leads to a "Bachelor of Engineering" degree, and has an engineering focus. According to the Bavarian Engineering Act, Frank is allowed to use the title "Engineer".
