The Boeing 767-260ER of Ethiopian Airlines was operating scheduled flight ET961 on the route Addis Ababa-Nairobi-Brazzaville-Lagos-Abidjan, but 20 minutes after takeoff it was hijacked by three young Ethiopian hijackers who were seeking political asylum in Australia, where they, having seized the plane, demanded that it be redirected. But the airliner made an emergency landing in the Indian Ocean 457 meters from the coast of the island of Ngazidja (Comoros Islands) due to the depletion of aviation fuel, after which it collapsed and went under water.
