He was a doctor, colonel in the National Guard and businessman. In 1857, he decided to acquire a large coffee farm, the Sant'Anna Farm, in Cantagalo, with 800 acres of land in Rio de Janeiro. It is believed that at one time this farm was the largest coffee producing unit in the world. The Baron of Cantagalo had one million and five hundred thousand coffee plants in production and it is estimated that there were more than 300 slaves. However, due to the crisis of the abolition of slavery and other factors, the baron became so indebted to the banks that Sant'Anna was auctioned off in a public square in 1900, being purchased by the coffee exporting company Monnerat & Cia, owned by José Hegdon Monnerat, for his nephew and son-in-law, Colonel Sebastião Monnerat Lutterbach. Under Colonel Sebastião's administration, the production of the Sant'Anna Farm diversified. It continued to produce coffee, but also began to produce cereals and sugarcane, ground and processed in its large mill. In addition, it had a herd of 500 head of dairy Guzerat cattle, whose milk was transformed into butter and cream cheese of the Sant'Anna brand, famous at the time. It was a huge production unit, whose produce was transported by Leopoldina trains, which stopped at Chave de Sant'Anna, 4 kilometers away from the farm. The farm remained in the family and today belongs to the great-grandson of Colonel Sebastião, who seeks not only to renovate but also to restore the farm and all the remaining buildings on the farm, keeping it productive.
