Bohdan (Zynovii-Bohdan) Mykhailovych Khmelnytskyi (January 6, 1596 - August 6, 1657) was a Ukrainian military, political and statesman. Hetman of the Zaporizhzhya Army, head of the Hetmanate (1648–1657). The leader of Khmelnytskyi is an uprising against the abuses of the crown nobility in Ukraine, which turned into a general, Cossack-led, war of liberation against the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The first of the Cossack leaders who was officially given the title of hetman[3].
