About :

Hellebores are the first plants to bloom in the garden and the first to decorate our balconies and terraces. They are the subject of our today's episode. How to display them in pots and how to care for them? And what to do with them after they have bloomed? These are some of the questions we answer in today's video. We invite you! The most popular species in our country is probably the white hellebore. It already occurs in various varieties, as well as interspecific crosses. The Polish name refers to the color of the flowers, which is why we call this plant white hellebore, while in Latin Helleborus niger, or black, is a reference to the black color of the roots. The popularity of the eastern hellebore species and its numerous varieties and hybrid varieties is also growing. These plants bloom in white, pink, purple and green, and are usually decorated with delicate patterns. It is worth remembering that these plants are not only beautiful, but also useful. They are the first food for newly waking bees, bumblebees and other pollinating insects. In early spring, when there are not many flowers yet and these useful insects fly out for their first meal, they can come across hellebores. For example, the 'Angel Glow' variety, which I bought covered in buds. It promises to be a really lush blooming, with smaller flowers, in fact, compared to other varieties presented here. But I think that in this case there will be strength in numbers. When buying hellebores to decorate outdoor pots, let's pay attention to the number of buds, which will guarantee long blooming. However, a great feature and advantage of these plants is that it is not the petals of hellebores that are decorative here, but their expanded calyx sepals. As a result, they retain their beauty much, much longer, even for several months. During this time, they provide cover for the ripening seeds, looking almost identical to when they are in bloom, only changing their color slightly, a little to pink, a little to green. They dry out only when the seeds are ripe. If we had these perennials planted in the garden, they could self-sow. It should be remembered that hellebores are highly poisonous plants. Therefore, when working with them, e.g. when transplanting, it is better to wear gloves. Generally, these plants do not tolerate their root system being disturbed, so if we buy such beautifully blooming specimens and want to enjoy their flowers until late spring or summer, we can leave them in production pots until they fade. And only then, when we are already changing the decoration of the balcony or terrace to summer flowers, let's transplant the hellebores to a new place. That's exactly what I will do. I will not transplant them for now, but I have a few suggestions on what to do with the hellebore beauties. Blooming hellebores are so delightful in themselves that they don't need any company. All you need to do is find a pot, cover or basket of your choice to create a spectacular balcony or terrace plant decoration. This variety of white hellebore, with really large flowers, will go into a tall container. Thanks to this, it will be closer to our eyes. In this form, it can be placed, for example, in the corner of a balcony or terrace, preferably in a place where we can look at it without any problems. Hellebores prefer to grow in sheltered and slightly shaded places. My next suggestion will be a decoration also made of just one hellebore, in the aforementioned 'Angel Glow' variety, but with some additions. Sometimes the cover that we choose for our specimen may not be quite right. To hide this, we can use, for example, pieces of bark and mask what does not look too nice. I will add a few birch twigs to my plant that have fallen during the storms. Thanks to this, the whole thing takes on a slightly forest character. Hellebores should have soil that is constantly moist during flowering, they cannot be allowed to dry out, but it cannot be waterlogged or wet either. Therefore, the covers or pots in which we place our plants must have drainage holes through which excess water will flow out. Unless our composition goes to a roofed place, where rainfall does not reach and where we will check whether excess water remains in the cover after watering.
