The colorful paintings on the wooden beams are also very beautiful. Stolberg Castle is also a very important symbol for the city. Through Niedergasse to the market square with the historic town hall, you come to the Rittertor. On the way you will find many colorful and lovingly renovated half-timbered houses. The town hall is a special feature - it does not have its own staircase. The upper floors can only be reached via the outside staircase. Stolberg Castle towers high above the town, from here you have a good panoramic view. A visit to the castle museum is definitely worthwhile. The castle belonged to the Princes of Stolberg from around 1300 to 1945 - Stolberg, one of the oldest noble families in Germany. It has been extensively renovated in recent years. The house was built in 1535 and served as a mint workshop. The minting of precious coins has a very long tradition in Stolberg and the coin museum still has all of its historical furnishings. Another museum is the Kleines Bürgerhaus, where you can see how people used to live. Here you can immerse yourself in times gone by. The imposing town hall stands on the market square. It is very interesting that the house does not have its own staircase; the upper floors are reached via an external staircase. On the facade you can find the coats of arms of the craft guilds. Stolberg/Harz is worth a visit as a day tourist or if you want to stay overnight. There are many good hotels here. The new town of Stolberg/Harz is nearby - here too there are many chic little half-timbered houses and a great view of the castle - a visit to the new town is definitely worthwhile. :-) The layout of Stolberg has hardly changed over the centuries, here you can still feel like you are in the Middle Ages. The small streets by the river Thyra are also worth a visit. Near Stolberg/Harz (Saxony-Anhalt) is the Joseph's Cross - the largest iron double cross in the world, it was built in 1896 from over 100 tons of steel and is held together by steel rivets. The Joseph's Cross is 38 meters high and can be reached via 200 steps. From here you have a great view. The Joseph's Cross is on the Josephshöhe mountain. When you climb the Josephskreuz via the iron stairs, you have a beautiful view over the Harz and the Harz foothills, especially when the weather is nice. As early as the 18th century, there was a wooden tower on the Auerberg, which served as a lookout point for hikers. As the wooden tower was repeatedly destroyed by storms, the tower was later built from iron and steel.
