Winter roads – roads laid along frozen rivers and snow-covered passes – operate in Siberia and the Far East during the four coldest months of the year. During this time, hundreds of trucks head north to deliver the bare necessities of life to remote villages and shift workers’ workplaces. The trucks carry fuel, food, clothing, and building materials. Drivers often risk their lives here. Their vehicles fall through the ice and crash on icy serpentines. Any equipment breakdown in freezing temperatures, when the temperature drops below 50 degrees, can lead to tragedy. But there are more and more people willing to work on the dangerous winter road.
