Last week we showed you how to harden knife blades in a charcoal grill. This week we're continuing with our instructions for hardening knife blades in a gas forge and hardening oven. We're showing you simple tips and tricks on how new knife makers can harden carbon steel knife blades to over 60 Rockwell hardness. In the gas forge we anneal the blade to hardening temperature and quench it in oil. After that, of course, the blade still has to be tempered. The quick quenching in rapeseed oil or hardening oil hardens the steel in the knife. If you don't need precise results and just want to get into the topic of knife making, hardening knives and hard knife blades, this is a great way to start and gain experience.
