It is Christmas Eve 1799. Hans Nielsen Hauge is in prison for the sixth time; now in the City Hall Arrest in Trondheim together with Haugian Lars Hemstad from Stange. In the video, a glimpse is given of Hauge's diverse life as a lay preacher and arresting officer, as a business manager and financier, as a serial entrepreneur and job broker, as a writer and paper producer, as a citizen of Bergen and a shipowner, etc. Here are texts taken from a new biography of Hauge by Leif- Runar Forsth and Jørn Bue Olsen. On Christmas Eve 1799, Hauge writes the hymn "Jeg er hos Gud i nåde" - which is also in today's hymn book. Then he sings it to his cellmate.
