Hailuoto, the largest island in the Bay of Bothnia, is located off Oulu. Life on the island, which is almost 200 square kilometers in size, often does not differ much from life on the mainland. The main occupation of the islanders is agriculture and livestock farming. Lichen is a special treasure of the island. Lichen harvesting is especially profitable. The lichen is picked while wet and placed in boxes to dry. The boxes are even sent abroad as grave decorations and ingredients for medicines. Hailuoto is a popular leisure destination and there are 600 holiday homes on the island.
