Among his most famous short stories is Bola de Sebo, the author's first short story, published in 1880, which quickly gained the enthusiasm of his peers and the public, becoming a huge success. Maupassant died in Paris on July 6, 1893, in a sanatorium at the age of 42 due to a suicide attempt caused by disorders associated with syphilis, which tormented him for more than a decade. He was buried in the Montparnasse cemetery, where he wrote his own epitaph: "I have desired everything and found pleasure in nothing. I have never been able to find anything."
