Vô Thường's real name is Võ Văn Thường, born in 1940 in Phan Rang, passed the 9th class of the Thu Duc military school. When he was young, he loved music very much, but had no means to study music, where he lived in Phan Rang there was no national music school like Saigon and Hue. Therefore, he taught himself to play the guitar. Thanks to his talent, he played the mandolin very well, and won the prize of "best mandolin player of the military region" in 1962. The name Vô Thường had appeared since then, but was only known to a few people in the military. He switched from mandolin to guitar in 1966. What is special is that he played the guitar with his left hand, unlike all guitar masters. Before 1975, he played at some American clubs in Nha Trang city. His military and artistic life would have gone on quietly, if not for the incident in 1975. After the April 30 event, Vo Thuong followed the first Vietnamese people to America to make a living, he opened a store selling tables, chairs, cabinets and beds, from then until 1987 he owned Kim's Furniture in Santa Ana, California. Because he had such a strong artistic streak, he “tried his luck” by partnering with a friend to open a dance hall called RITZ in March 1983. Although he did not meet with his fellow artists on stage, he continued to borrow the sound of the guitar to play the golden age music of the South, not only Vietnamese music but also foreign music. On Sunday, April 19, 1987, at Pho Ngon restaurant in Orange County, California, Vo Thuong released his first two music tapes “Ru khuc mong thuong” 1 and 2, with the presence of 200 friends, and achieved a very significant financial and artistic result. He donated the $800 from the debut tape sales to the International Rescue Committee to help orphans in Southeast Asian refugee camps. His musical path had only returned for a few months in 1987 but had already created a big echo, the echoes of which reverberated until the day he passed away in April 2003 after many months of fighting death due to cancer, after 16 years of success with more than 120 CDs left for posterity.
