About 100 migrants have arrived in Guatemala City on the last of five U.S. deportation flights in 2024, officials said. The deportees, the vast majority Guatemalans, arrived from U.S. cities such as El Paso and were registered at a return center before being released. More than 70,500 Guatemalans have been returned to their country from January 2024 through Thursday (Dec. 26), according to the undersecretary of the Guatemalan Migration Institute, Elmer José Pinzón. Guatemala is open to receiving citizens of other Central American nations who are deported from the United States, according to three sources familiar with the matter. It is a sign that the center-left government of President Bernardo Arévalo wants to start on good terms with Trump, who will take office on January 20, 2025.
