Eight-part series in which the history of the province is extensively discussed, from its origins to the present. The program is part of the manifestation Verleden van Groningen. When the city of Groningen finally joins the States General and the House of Orange in 1594, it has long been an economically prosperous place. It owes much of its wealth to the Ommelanden. In the two centuries that follow, it expands its power further, the Veenkolonien in particular are important in this respect. The peat that is dug here is traded via the city to the Dutch cities. The city of Groningen stimulates the exploitation by building canals and by buying peat areas. The fact that the Ommelanden also benefit from the trade via the city is evident from the wealth of the borgen, among other things. Presentation: Roel Dijkhuis.
