I have just visited Kim Johnsen, who works as head greenkeeper at Aarhus Golf Club. Kim says that the grass year at the club has been challenging in 2024. The club's grass has been affected by the fungal disease dollar spot, which sneaks in and destroys the surface of the grass during the golf season without attacking the grass roots. You will find dollar spot on tees, fairways, greens and grass areas, but is typically not a problem for grass in private gardens, as it is mowed higher. In addition, dollar spot affects during the golf season, while other grass-related diseases affect most in the winter. I ask Kim if it could be due to all the rain we have had in 2024, but he does not think that is the only explanation. The disease is complex, and Kim has therefore been in contact with experts to find out what they should do to combat dollar spot. According to Kim, there is no clear pattern in how the disease starts and spreads, as other clubs have been in the same situation under different weather conditions. I'm talking about what I've seen in the private gardens that I've visited this year. As everyone probably knows, it's rained a lot in 2024, and we've also seen that the grass has grown a lot. I've definitely used more fertilizer during this season. This is because the grass gets hungrier when it grows more than usual. At Aarhus Golf Club, Kim constantly keeps an eye on wear, playing surface, growth, and there's a lot of work to do to create fast greens at the correct height. I focus on many of the same things, but it's now easier to take care of a private garden than a golf course, as there aren't as many visitors in a private garden to wear down the grass. Wear is something completely different on a golf course. The video ends with a trip past the machine hall to see the many special machines that are used on a golf course. Big thanks to Kim Johansen and Aarhus Golf Club for letting me stop by and geek out on grass!
