The roughcast is the bonding layer composed of a very rich mortar (1/2 or 1/3 sand for a volume of binder). For concrete blocks, the ideal is a mixture of lime and cement, which is then called bastard mortar. It is more liquid than classic mortar, which will facilitate the speckling on the wall by projecting it with the back of a trowel without troweling or smoothing.
