Powerless in the face of the escalation of violence in Ukraine and the Middle East, international organizations, and in particular the UN, appear particularly weakened and discredited today. Although these institutions were founded by the great powers, the latter frequently break their own rules. While Russia is rightly singled out on this subject, Western countries have not been left behind in the past, as illustrated by the interventions in Kosovo, Iraq and Libya. The unilateralism promoted by Donald Trump could also pave the way for the rise of China and other countries of the "Global South" within international bodies, which are seeking to develop their influence there. A picture that calls into question the idea of a clear opposition between Western democracies, supposed to respect international law, and dictatorships that flout it, as well as that of a UN that is totally outdated. What is the relationship between the great powers and international organizations? Are Western democracies more respectful of international law than other countries? How can we explain the persistence of military interventions abroad despite their recurring failures? Are the UN and international justice really ineffective? These are all questions addressed in this podcast with Anne-Cécile Robert, deputy director of Le Monde diplomatique and author of “The Challenge of Peace, Reshaping International Organizations” (Armand Colin, 2024).
