Lincean member Giorgio Manzi introduces the work of Svante Pääbo, appointed Foreign Member of the Accademia del Lincei in 2021, awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 2022 “thanks to his pioneering research, Svante Pääbo has accomplished a seemingly impossible feat [...] revealing the genetic differences that distinguish all living humans from extinct hominids” and providing “the basis for exploring what makes us uniquely human”. Begun with the exploit of 1997, exactly 25 years ago, this research extends the field of interest and the influence of the science of our origins. Pääbo is therefore the father of a new scientific discipline: paleogenomics. The Lincean Conference is dedicated to the memory of Luca Serianni.
