They tower majestically 35 meters high and each weigh an impressive 1000 tons: the two new incineration boilers that are being installed in the waste incineration plant in Ludwigshafen. A huge feat of strength! What makes the whole thing even more impressive: the installation is taking place while operations are ongoing. The garbage of a million people around Ludwigshafen is tirelessly burned here to be converted into energy for thousands of households - even during construction work. But before the new boilers could take their place, a building was specially built for the first one, while the second takes the place of the demolished boiler. The modernization of the power plant took a total of eight years and cost around 100 million euros. Ignis, the mammoth project, is derived from Latin and means fire - an apt name for such a project. The program followed with great excitement not only the firing up of the first new boiler, but also the demolition of the old boiler. But it is not just garbage that is burned here. In addition to everyday business, there is also room for art and culture in the waste incineration plant. There might be classical music with compulsory helmets from the Acelga Quintet or a video art festival on the topic of consumption from the Mannheim Industrial Art Association. Or a garbage collection campaign in which the garbage is first collected together with the managing director Thomas Grommes and then turned into works of art.
