The USS Roosevelt (CVN-71), a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier of the Nimitz class, is one of the most powerful ships in the US Navy. With a displacement of around 97,000 tons and a length of over 332 meters, it can accommodate a crew of more than 5,600 people - including 3,200 ship crew members and 2,480 aircraft personnel. Equipped with two nuclear reactors driving four propellers, it reaches speeds of over 30 knots (approx. 56 km/h). Its flight deck, an impressive 76.80 meters wide, serves as a take-off and landing area for up to 85 aircraft, including the most modern fighter jets and reconnaissance aircraft. The Roosevelt is not only a floating airfield, but also a defensive structure. With its weapons systems, it is able to defend itself and its aircraft against threats from the air and sea. Whether as a symbol of military strength, as a mobile base of operations or as a floating city, the USS Roosevelt is a masterpiece of modern technology and an essential part of the US Navy's global operational capability. ► In 1999, missions were flown over the former Yugoslavia from the USS Roosevelt during the Kosovo War.
