Sermon from July 18, 2021 preached by Adam Szustak OP XVI Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B 1st reading (Jr 23:1-6) God Himself Will Appoint Shepherds Reading from the Book of the Prophet Jeremiah The Lord says: "Woe to the shepherds who lead to ruin and scatter the sheep from my pasture! Therefore thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, concerning the shepherds who are to shepherd my people: You have scattered my sheep, you have scattered them and have not looked after them. Behold, I will repay the iniquity of your deeds. I myself will gather the remnant of my sheep out of all the countries where I have driven them. I will bring them back to their pasture, that they may be fruitful and multiply. And I will appoint shepherds over them, and they shall fear no more, nor be dismayed, neither shall they need to seek any. Behold, the days are coming when I will raise up to David a righteous Branch. He will reign as king, acting wisely, and will execute justice and righteousness on earth. In his days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell in safety. This is the name by which he will be called: "The Lord our righteousness." 2nd reading (Eph 2:13-18) Christ unites humanity Reading from the Letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to the Ephesians Brothers: In Christ Jesus, you who once were far off have become near by the blood of Christ. For he is our peace, who has made both of us one, breaking down the dividing wall of hostility. In his body he made void the law of commandments in its ordinances, so that he might create in himself one new man out of the two, making peace, and so reconcile both to God in one Body through the cross, having killed the hostility in himself. And he came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near, because through him we both have access by one Spirit to the Father. Gospel (Mark 6:30-34) Jesus has compassion on the crowds Words of the Gospel according to St. Mark The apostles gathered together to Jesus and told him all that they had done and taught. And he said to them, "Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while." For so many were coming and going that they had no time even to eat. So they went away in a boat into a deserted place by themselves. But they were seen going away. Many saw this and ran there on foot from every town, and even outstripped them. And when Jesus had landed, he saw a large crowd. He had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. And he began to teach them many things.
