Getting sick people fit again in just 6 months through a change in diet and targeted exercise. That's what nutritional doctor Dr. Annette Balz-Fritz and sports scientist Prof. Ingo Froböse want to try in an experiment. Will their health formula be successful? Many mistakes are made when it comes to nutrition, says doctor Annette Balz-Fritz: "Food is one of our most important medicines, and it can save us a lot of useless pills." Sports professor Ingo Froböse also sees the formula for better health in a combination of exercise, diet and regeneration. He thinks it is a mistake for sick people to avoid sport for fear that the pain will get worse. In September 2018, we looked for and found two candidates for this experiment: The first candidate is Hans Dieter-Oberle. He has suffered from rheumatism for years, which means he can no longer run 200 meters without pain and swallows 10 tablets a day. In addition, all the medication he takes has caused him to develop diabetes. He is caught in a vicious circle of medication and is now looking for help. The second candidate is Verena Werner. The professional triathlete has pain in her ischium and suffers from a bloated stomach. She has not been able to train for months and her career is at an end. Our two candidates are like many patients: they are no longer getting anywhere with conventional medicine. Nutritional medicine specialist Dr. Annette Balz-Fritz and sports scientist Prof. Ingo Froböse want to help and are convinced that with the right health program, illnesses can be brought under control without medication. They have created an individual health program for our candidates and supported them for 6 months. However, for the patients, changing their lifestyle is often more difficult than expected: Hans Dieter Oberle is a die-hard Swabian. His diet has so far consisted of a lot of meat and little vegetables. The idea of swapping roast pork for broccoli patties is difficult for him. But green and purple vegetables will often end up on his plate in the future if he wants to get his rheumatism under control. These vegetables have anti-inflammatory properties, while pork tends to promote inflammation. Verena Walter has a tough time ahead of him. A bloated stomach is a sign of food allergies. They could trigger inflammation in her body. Could it be her favorite foods that are making her ill? The two of them also have to make changes to their sporting routine. Sick people often don't dare to do any sport - a mistake, says Prof. Ingo Froböse: "With many illnesses, many people are really afraid to exercise, but exercise is the most important driver of our health." It all depends on the right kind of exercise. While for Verena Walter the problem is "too much" and her body needs regeneration, for Hans Dieter Oberle the opposite is the case. He no longer does any sport at all. Ingo Froböse tries to get the rheumatism sufferer moving again with exercises that are gentle on his joints.
