GERMANY: Power grid at its limit? Surplus solar power could cause grid operators to struggle. Business editor Daniel Wetzel explains the problem. The massive expansion of photovoltaics in Germany is increasingly pushing the power grids to their limits. Especially on holidays such as Easter, surplus solar power threatens to cause grid frequency fluctuations, which in the worst case can lead to regional brownouts. Grid operators are obliged to take excess power, even if demand is low and prices on the electricity exchange become negative. Taxpayers bear the difference in costs - in 2024 alone, they amounted to over 20 billion euros. Experts warn of rising costs and urgently call for better control mechanisms for solar power.
