Bunker 409 is ready. Ten volunteers worked hard on it for a year. Many free Saturdays were spent renovating the Vermittlungs & Kommunikation bunker. a former communication bunker of the German air force in the dunes of Oostvoorne. "It starts with poking the ground with iron pins; where exactly is the bunker, where is the entrance", says Ton van der Hoeven, board member of the Biberbunker Foundation in Oostvoorne. "We dug it out, the walls were bricked up, the ceiling panels were replaced because they were all broken. New doors and doorposts were installed. Lighting was installed. The emergency exit and the antenna box were bricked up again and the chimneys were repaired." The bunker was built in 1941 and was only in use for one year to handle the message traffic from within the anti-aircraft position. The opened bunker is located near the Biberbunker, the large radar command post of the Luftwaffe. From this central bunker with three-metre thick walls, allied aircraft were tracked down and attacked. Flak The attacks that were coordinated from the position were carried out by German fighters and the so-called flak, an abbreviation of Flugabwehrkanone; the name for the German anti-aircraft gun during the Second World War. A real flak is the other new acquisition of the foundation. A completely restored flak has recently been on display on the site. The bunker and flak will be unveiled on 25 May. In total, there are 97 bunkers around Oostvoorne, covered with earth. The foundation would like to excavate another bunker to complete the picture, says board member Van der Hoeven. "Five bunkers have already been excavated, including this 409 and the large Biberbunker. There will be another one, a personnel bunker. It is on the list and there is money for it." We are going to excavate it next year and make it accessible. And with those six bunkers we have a nice reflection of the Biberbunker radar position here, then it is really complete."
