In this video, Professor William Maluf discusses straight-toothed and helical-toothed bevel gears. The advantages and disadvantages of each type are presented and discussed. The basic terminology of pinions and crowns is shown. The types of tooth profiles are mentioned. The special case of an annular (or planar) crown is detailed and a kinematic analogy with a pinion and rack is made. The basic principle of hypoid gears is explained.
