Whether VEB Leuna-Werke or VEB Chemische Werke Buna, whose motto was "Plastics and elastics from Schkopau", both were typical examples of large-scale central German industry in the former GDR. All of these large factories - be they steelworks, coal works, refineries or chemical plants - always had a connection to the railway to deliver raw materials and transport finished products away. Not only factory railways or short connecting lines, but also long freight trains with heavy diesel locomotives of the German Reichsbahn were inseparably linked to this heavy industry. While on the one hand there are model railroaders who enjoy steam locomotives and passenger trains that travel through beautiful miniature worlds, on the other hand there are also true model building masters who have grown fond of the railway traffic of factory and industrial railways of the former GDR. Olaf Brabandt is one of those model building specialists who has created a model layout that is intended to reflect the chemical triangle of Halle an der Saale from the late 1970s to the early 1990s. The main focus of this sensational model railway layout in 1/87 scale can be outlined with the five words "Industry - Patina - Dirt - Dust - Grime". Not only are the buildings weathered, but the roads, locomotives and freight wagons also have dirt everywhere. Under the title "Model factory and connecting railway - VEB Chemical Combine Halle an der Saale", Olaf Brabandt has built a modular layout in rectangular shape with dimensions of 7.60 meters x 0.45 meters over the last seven years to represent the shunting operations and traffic of factory and industrial railways in the former GDR, which he definitely succeeded in doing perfectly! The model railway layout, which was exhibited during the model railway exhibition "Model in the Hotel" on the occasion of the Kühlungsborn Model Railway Days, shows production and workshops, large silos, warehouses, pipe bridges, tank containers and loading and unloading points, as they were once found at the Leuna or Buna works.
