Around 1600, Everardus Everardi ab Emda (d' Emda) and his wife Albertien Veelcker lived in the Asinga Borg. They had the gatehouse built in 1611, as is evident from the family crests and the date on the facade. After the Reduction of Groningen in 1594, they remained Catholic and the building served as a clandestine church. During restoration, traces of the practice of the Catholic religion were found. The Asingaborg was sold for demolition and demolished in 1744. Only the gatehouse and an old barn were spared. Nothing is known about the occupation of the gatehouse after that. In the years 1798-1800 it was repeatedly offered for rent, but there was not much interest. In the spring of 1863, a spacious middle house and a large barn were built at the gate, with stables for horses and cattle. Between 1869 and 1877 parts of the terrain were sold for the construction of a reformed church and school. In 1870 dr. Wichers sold the entire northern part including the gate. The buyer was SJ Huizenga, from whom it passed to his brother CJ Huizenga in 1903. He died in 1917, his widow B. Wibbens in 1926. At public auction in 1926 the remaining complex was sold to Miss A. Vinhuizen. She had the buildings from 1863 demolished and the gatehouse thoroughly restored, during which the facade stones with the Asinga coat of arms were also installed. In 1972 the building was bought by Cornelis Geert Reinders, who had the gatehouse restored again between 1979 and 1981. The church hall was returned to its original state. The Asinga castle terrain is now partly built-up, partly park. Of the canals, only the northern one from the gatehouse to the church is still intact. The castle stood on a hill, the high heem. The hill was demolished to fill in the inner moat. This area is now lower than the rest of the park. During the Open Monument Days 2024, an exhibition of acrylic paintings by sisters Harmy Schreiber and Adriana Bouwman was on display in the clandestine church, and in the attic of the gate, building ceramics, agricultural tools and curiosities were on display.
