Gas prices are rising because of Ukraine. By stopping Russian gas transit, Kiev has pushed the stock market price of the energy carrier to a 14-month high. This means that the price of one megawatt-hour of gas on the Dutch gas exchange has now increased from the previous 40 to 50 euros. The decision affects Slovakia the most sensitively, so consultations have been initiated with Ukraine and the European Commission. However, the meeting scheduled for today has been canceled because of the Ukrainians. Hungary and Slovakia agree that stopping gas transit will have extremely negative consequences throughout Europe.
