If you ask Ukrainians from other regions what the word "Kharkiv" is associated with, you will hear "industry", "scientific center", "student capital", etc. Very few will mention the words "oil and gas" in this context. This situation is rather a plus. Since considerable raw material resources are not the main characteristic of the territory, it means that the region really has serious potential. Nevertheless, the Kharkiv region has been one of the main hydrocarbon producers in Ukraine for 60 years. The region is located on the territory of the Dnieper-Pripyat oil and gas province, the active industrial development of resources of which began in the 1950s. It so happened that at different times Sumy, Poltava, and Prykarpattia were called the "Ukrainian Kuwait". The Kharkiv region faded into the background, although the famous Shebelinka is located in the region. Today, about 40% of the gas produced in Ukraine is produced by Kharkiv. For the general public, the Kharkiv region in the context of hydrocarbons arose several years ago, when the shale epic began. After all, half of the Yuzovskoye field, the reserves of which the State Geology and Natural Resources Agency estimated at 10 trillion cubic meters of gas, is located in the south-eastern districts of the Kharkiv region. As is known, the right to develop this field was won by Shell. The first gas was found at the Pavlovsko-Svetlovskoye field in October 2013. But already in March 2015, Shell and Ukrgazdobycha announced that the project would be closed due to the war.
