Our contribution to the Salzburg-AG, which we are thankfully allowed to upload. Enjoy watching! Our gardens can become a very important living area and a place of retreat for our native animal and, of course, plant life. It is important to rethink outdated behavior patterns. Away from sterile and "tidy" gardens, towards structure-rich and lively open spaces in which we and our native animal life find a home. By providing these creatures with a habitat again, we are making an important contribution to combating the extinction of insects and species. Of course, we do not use any poisons in our natural gardens and give nature the time it needs to regulate things itself. Insects are the main source of food for our native birds and also for hedgehogs, for example. A high insect population therefore makes a very direct contribution to the protection and preservation of these native creatures. Perennials and grasses Perennials and grasses are simply left standing. This creates important wintering quarters for many animal species. Not only wild bees, but also butterflies, beetles, harvestmen and countless other organisms survive on and in stems or under leaves. We also benefit from a wonderful autumn and winter backdrop. Time and again, hoarfrost conjures up wonderful pictures in our gardens. Pruning is then done in spring from April onwards. By then, most insects are already fresh and lively. Meadows and flower meadows The situation is somewhat different with flower meadows or grasslands. In order to maintain or promote the diversity of existing flowers, they should be mown before or just after winter and the resulting cuttings should be removed. But even here, a certain area should be left standing. About 1/4 or less can be left as a wintering area for insects but also as an important source of food for our birds. The resulting hay can be composted. It can also be used to build hedgehog shelters. Leaves Leaves are left on the edges, under hedges and under bushes and trees. The leaves are an important place where a wide variety of animal groups live and develop, such as insects, arachnids, worms and so on. These in turn are a source of food for our hedgehogs and our birds. Leaves are only removed from flower meadows and meadows that have been mown. Excess leaves are an extremely valuable raw material. They can be composted or used as mulch in the vegetable garden or in the perennial bed. Autumn is planting time Autumn is a really excellent time to plant woody plants such as fruit trees or wild shrubs, but also perennials and of course bulbous plants. Bulbous plants can only be planted in autumn. Bulbous plants such as crocuses or daffodils are particularly inexpensive compared to potted plants. Since most of them are early bloomers, they make a very important contribution to supporting our wild bees, bumblebees, butterflies and other insects that are active early in the year. Their first source of food is thus provided. Small consolation when the vole strikes again: voles are vital for our bumblebees' survival, because many of our native bumblebee species build their nests in the burrows of our mice. The voles are sometimes even actively driven away by the bumblebee queen in spring to leave the burrow to her. Video contains advertising and product placements.
