Gandalf - The True Story of the Great Wizard (The Lord of the Rings / The Hobbit) Gandalf, being one of the Maiar, was originally named Olórin. In the First and Second Ages of Middle-earth, he lived in Aman among the Valar. When Sauron's dark influence grew stronger, the Valar chose several Maiar to help the peoples of Middle-earth. Having been chosen, Olórin wanted to refuse, because he was afraid of Sauron, but the Vala Manwë told him that fear was another reason to go to Middle-earth. In the year 1000 of the Third Age, Olórin left Valinor and sailed to the Grey Havens. He arrived there after two other Istari, Curomo and Aywendil, also known as Saruman and Radagast. Around this time, Sauron appeared in Mirkwood in the guise of a necromancer. In Mithlond, Olórin was met by Glorfindel and Cirdan the Shipwright. Cirdan gave Olórin Narya, one of the nine Elven rings of power, and prophesied that the wizard would face great toil and danger, and that the ring would ease his lot.
