About :

Despite a passage by Caesar that was too quickly interpreted as a total rejection of writing, the Gauls left a rich epigraphic documentation, in the Greek alphabet and then in the Latin alphabet, which has rapidly increased in recent decades due to the enormous efforts made by archaeology. Although our knowledge of the language remains incomplete, it is possible to get an idea of the varied uses of writing between the conquest of Narbonne (125 to 121 BCE) and the Three Gauls (58 to 50 BCE) and a period as recent as the beginning of Late Antiquity. Gallic writing was initially monumental, until Latin became widespread in inscriptions intended for a wide audience, around 100 CE; then, Gaulish persisted for a very long time in more modest genres of texts, intended for private reading, such as accounting on terracotta, or clandestine, such as curses on lead. The total disappearance of Gaulish in all its written and oral uses must be dated very late, shortly before the end of the Roman Empire itself. EMMANUEL DUPRAZ Emmanuel Dupraz, lecturer at the Université libre de Bruxelles, director of cumulative studies at the EPHE - PSL, is a specialist in ancient Italic and Celtic languages and epigraphies. His latest monograph, published in 2022, focuses on Umbrian and is entitled "Aufbau und Komponenten der umbrischen Ritualbeschreibungen: die Iguvinischen Tafeln II, III und IV" (Buske Verlag, Hamburg). His work takes into account both the morphosyntax of the languages of Italy and Gaul, including from a comparative perspective, and the uses of writing that document these languages, that is to say their pragmatics and sociolinguistics. LECTURE CYCLE: Page dedicated to the lecture cycle including the brochure: https://ilara.hypotheses.org/13497 Writing was invented, independently, in several places and in always different contexts: in Mesopotamia and Egypt at the end of the 4th millennium, in the Aegean world and China in the 2nd millennium, in the Indus Valley in the 3rd millennium, in Central America in the 1st millennium BC. Through multiple paths, the various alphabetic scripts derive from these first written traditions. As much as they are tools of linguistic notation, writings are modes of visual communication and markers of cultural identities, reflecting the ancient societies that created, transmitted and transformed them. This series of conferences presents some of these writings and the richness of their history. The conferences, given by specialists in the writings in question, are aimed at a wide audience. PRACTICAL INFORMATION: • The conferences take place in the form of Zoom events, on Thursdays from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. • Registration on the EPHE Eventbrite.
