Every time I don't know what I would like to write about, I go back to a certain graphic that I saw a long time ago on the profile of Marek Pacyński, a famous modeler, graphic artist and illustrator, whom I greet warmly from this place, even though I will never agree with Mr. Marek on certain issues. This graphic shows an Fw 190 aircraft with Polish checkerboards. A joke, a famous modeler's what if, or maybe there is some deeper story behind it? It turns out that yes, and it is directly related to my favorite aviation unit formed in the Soviet Union during World War II, namely the 4th Mixed Air Division, which included the 1st Fighter Aviation Regiment "Warsaw", commanded during his stay at the front by Colonel Pilot Ivan Taldykin, and later by Vasyl Gaszyn, the 2nd Night Bomber Regiment "Krakow" and the 3rd Attack Aviation Regiment. This unit, during the famous great January offensive of the Red Army in January 1945, initially operated in the Warsaw area, where individual regiments formed the 4th Mixed Division entered combat and participated from September 1944, among others in operations to relieve the Warsaw insurgents. For example, the 2nd Kraków Night Bomber Regiment delivered drops of food and ammunition to the fighting insurgents. However, after the fall of the Warsaw Uprising, operations ceased. Of course, when there was a bit more talk about the supply of weapons and food to the insurgents by pilots from Polish units formed in the USSR, suddenly the other side appeared, which began to prove that it had no significance and that it was a fact that the aid for the uprising came very late, but it is not like it can be completely depreciated and said that it had no significance. Because it did have significance for the insurgents fighting in Czerniaków. In any case, in January 1945, the front moved, and after a few days, the Division began to transfer along with the front, which was to take part in operational activities carried out in Pomerania. The first in line in Pomerania were the Po-2s from the 103rd Independent Liaison Aviation Squadron, which formally was part of the 4th Mixed Division, but de facto was permanently assigned to the headquarters of the 1st Polish Army.
