High-ranking politicians, friends and family members are saying goodbye to Helmut Kohl. His funeral is an enormous undertaking. The coffin will be transported by air, land and water. It is one of the largest funerals in German post-war history: two weeks after his death, former Chancellor Helmut Kohl will be buried today, Saturday. The funeral ceremonies at three locations in Strasbourg, Ludwigshafen and Speyer will last the entire day. Kohl was Chancellor for 16 years and CDU Chairman for 25 years. He died on June 16 at the age of 87. Thousands of people are expected to attend the funeral ceremonies. First, politicians and state guests will say goodbye to Kohl at a memorial service in the EU Parliament in Strasbourg. This is the first time that a deceased politician has been honoured for his services to Europe with such a European memorial service. Speeches are planned by Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU), EU Council President Donald Tusk and former US President Bill Clinton, among others. There will be no German state ceremony for Kohl. Afterwards, a federal police helicopter will fly the coffin with Kohl's body back from Strasbourg to his birthplace Ludwigshafen. There, the coffin will be driven through the city center in a short funeral procession in the afternoon so that people there can say their goodbyes. The coffin will then be put on a ship, which will then travel the last few kilometers on the Rhine to nearby Speyer. Kohl had had a special relationship with the cathedral city since his childhood. The requiem is scheduled for the early evening in the Imperial Cathedral, to which around 1,500 invited guests are expected. These include Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU). Up to 3,500 people can watch the funeral mass on a video screen near the cathedral. More than a thousand police officers will ensure security in the Speyer and Ludwigshafen area alone. After the funeral service, the Bundeswehr will honor the deceased Chancellor with a military ceremony. The coffin will then be taken to a nearby cemetery and buried there in the presence of close friends and family. Kohl's remains will not be placed in the family grave in Ludwigshafen, where his first wife Hannelore, who died in 2001, was buried. Disputes between the widow Maike Kohl-Richter and Kohl's son Walter had overshadowed the preparations for the funeral ceremonies. (Source: dpa)
