Program about the book Fathers and Sons, by Russian writer Ivan Sergeievitch Turgenev, published in 1862. Considered one of the most important works of Russian literature of the 19th century, Fathers and Sons caused controversy when it was published in 1862, criticizing both conservative Russians and younger people who advocated a more open and scientific society. When the book was published, Tsar Neikolaus I had decreed the end of serfdom and society was demanding change. The main character of the book, Yevgeny Vassíliev Bazarov, declares himself a nihilist (from the Latin nihil - nothing), always willing to question authorities and principles. With this work, Turgenev popularized the term nihilist and was accused of inciting a wave of protests that set fire to St. Petersburg months after the book was published. Ederson Granetto interviews Professor Elena Nicolaevna Vássina, from the Department of Oriental Literature at the School of Philosophy, Literature and Human Sciences at USP. *Watch UNIVESP TV live and see our full schedule at http://univesptv.cmais.com.br *From Monday to Friday at 9am and 9pm, the Estúdio Univesp program brings interviews, debates, news and special features to UNIVESP TV.
