I remember my first encounter with FAP (in Polish functional analysis of behavior). During the class. Exercise form, the instructor suggests a simulation. Hating silence and averted gaze, I volunteer. I sit down opposite the lecturer, who, in the role of a therapist, asks me what I come with, what thought I would like to look at. I don't know what came over me then, but I said then that I often have such thoughts, that I am incompetent. And suddenly, as if a huge burden, stuffed in corners for years, fell on my head. We look each other in the eye, and he says that he understands, that it is difficult, that sometimes he feels the same way. No criticism. No questions about certificates, diplomas. No advice or tips that would ease my feelings. Empathy, understanding, presence. I don't know when tears as big as peas started dripping down my cheeks. I felt no shame. I felt that I could cry over this feeling. Some of the observers cried with me. I name what I feel, and yet none of us wants to think about ourselves, let alone FEEL incompetent! This is not magic. This is behaviorism. This is reinforcing behaviors with presence, empathy. That's all. I talk about this technique of work, the skills of a therapist and the use of functional analysis of behavior with my today's interlocutor, Dr. Joanna Dudek. The reason for the conversation is the book "Psychotherapy based on functional analysis", published in Poland by @wydawnictwogwp, the patron of today's episode, which I heartily recommend to all specialists and students of psychotherapy of all modalities. Joanna Dudek - PhD in social sciences, psychologist, psychotherapist, assistant professor at SWPS University. Certified Motivational Interviewing Specialist, Cognitive Behavioral Psychotherapist (PTTPB certificate), ACT therapist, certified trainer of Functional Analytic Psychotherapy (FAP). As part of her doctoral studies, she completed an internship in Seattle, at the University of Washington, collaborating with Robert Kohlenberg, Mavis Tsai, and Jonathan Kanter. Member of the Polish Society of Behavioral Psychology, Polish Society of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Polish Motivational Interviewing Association, Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers, Association for Contextual Behavioral Science, and FAP Certification Committee.
