Since you came all this way, if you allow me, I would like to briefly ask the reporters some questions you may have been curious about before giving my acceptance speech. When I first received the news of my award from the Nobel Committee, it didn't feel real, so I tried to just calmly and calmly talk. After I hung up the phone and checked the media reports, it only made sense. I was so happy and thankful that I quietly celebrated that night. Since then, many people have sincerely and warmly congratulated me. The past week, when so many people were happy as if it were their own, will be a special memory for me. On the other hand, there were also those who were concerned about the peace of my personal life. I am grateful for those who paid such close attention to me. I believe and hope that my daily life will not change much from before. Since I am a person who connects with the world through my writing, I would like to continue writing as I have done so far and meet readers through my books. Right now, I am trying hard to complete a novel that I have been writing since this spring. I hope to meet you with a new work in the first half of next year, but since I have always been wrong when I predict when I will complete my novels, it is difficult for me to give you an exact date. Now, I will share the acceptance speech that I have prepared for this occasion. I cannot drink alcohol. Recently, I have stopped drinking all caffeine, including coffee, for my health. I rarely travel, which I used to enjoy, anymore. In other words, I am often asked what fun I have in life. Instead, I like walking. I try not to miss out on the many good books that are pouring out, but I like my bookshelf, which is filled with books I have yet to read, just as much as the books I have read. I like every day spent laughing and joking with my loving family and close friends. What I like most in such a simple daily life is the time I spend thinking about the novel I want to write. I imagine the outline of a novel I have not yet written and write a little bit as it comes to mind, erase more than I write, and try to get to know the characters I want to write in various ways. When I actually start writing a novel, I inevitably get lost, and when I turn a corner and enter an unexpected place, I am surprised, but when I finally make it to completion after a long detour, I feel great joy. I published my first novel in January 1994, so this year marks exactly 30 years since I started writing. The strange thing is that when I look back on my real life, which I have tried to live faithfully for the past 30 years, it feels short, like a handful of sand slipping through my fingers, whereas the time I spent writing feels vivid, like a long current flowing, as if it were 30 years. I will turn 54 in about a month. If we assume that the golden age of writers is usually between the ages of 50 and 60, then there are 6 years left. Of course, there are writers who are active until they are 70 or 80, but that depends on luck in many ways, so for now, I want to focus on writing the three books I have in mind for the next six years. Of course, as I write like that, I will think of other books I want to write during those six years, just like I have done so far, and I have an ominous feeling that I will never be able to properly die while thinking about the three imaginary books that are always piling up in front of me.
