King Fuad (March 26, 1868 - April 28, 1936) Sultan of Egypt (1917 - 1922), then his official titles became: King of Egypt and Sudan, and Lord of Nubia, Kordofan and Darfur. He studied in Italy, and graduated from its military college. After graduating, he was appointed adjutant to Sultan Abdul Hamid II, and returned to Egypt in (1890), and took care of cultural affairs, so he headed the committee that established and organized the Egyptian National University (1906), and upon the death of his brother Sultan Hussein I (1917), Fuad ascended the throne of Egypt in (1917). During his reign, the 1919 revolution took place and the British were forced to lift their protection of Egypt and recognize it as an independent sovereign kingdom. Fuad declared independence on March 12, 1922, and formed the first popular ministry headed by leader Saad Zaghloul in January (1924). In the summer of (1936), a treaty was concluded between Egypt and Britain, in which the latter recognized Egypt as an independent state. 1917. During his reign, King Fuad I strengthened Egyptian sovereignty and worked to achieve the country's independence. His reign also witnessed cultural, educational and economic development in Egypt. In 1936, King Fuad I died and was succeeded by his son, King Farouk I.
