Lothar Scholz was born on December 14, 1928 in Berlin-Lichtenberg. At the age of ten he joined the Jungvolk, four years later the Hitler Youth. In 1945 he volunteered for military service and was taken prisoner by the Soviets after the end of the war. Two years after his release in 1945, he was arrested again and did eight and a half years of forced labor in Vorkuta, Siberia. Lothar Scholz was not released until 1955 on the initiative of Chancellor Adenauer.
