In the last part of my Alsace series, we visit Strasbourg, the largest city in the Grand-Est region. Strasbourg, a vibrant metropolis, lies on the River Ill and impresses with its medieval old town, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The tour begins at the Place de la République, whose monuments are reminiscent of the eventful history between France and Germany. We see impressive buildings such as the National Theater, the National Library and the Palais de Rhin, once the imperial palace, now the seat of the Rhine Navigation Commission. We continue into the old town, past the Janus Fountain, which symbolizes the connection between German and French culture. Highlights of the walk are the Strasbourg Cathedral, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture, and the fascinating astronomical clock from the 19th century. At Place Gutenberg, a monument commemorates Johannes Gutenberg, the inventor of the printing press. A special tip: a boat trip on the Ill offers a unique view of the city. Strasbourg, with its EU institutions and historic districts such as "Petit France", is definitely worth a visit.
