Webinar by Nadia Ahufinger, PhD in Clinical and Health Psychology from the University of Barcelona and graduate in Primary Education (specialization in special needs) from the UAB. There are many children who show significant difficulties in understanding and/or using oral language. In some cases, these difficulties have a clear cause such as hearing problems, some brain or neurological condition, intellectual disability or, for example, some syndrome such as Down syndrome, but in other cases the cause is uncertain. To this day, in our context, children who have language difficulties for an unknown reason are diagnosed with a disorder called SLI (specific language disorder) so that it appears that they only have difficulties at a linguistic level. Consequently, the term SLI has caused many children to be excluded from the diagnosis for not meeting the restrictive criteria of the definition of the disorder. In 2016, different professionals in the field in the Anglo-Saxon context opened a great debate to rethink the term, the definition, classification and the evaluation criteria for the diagnosis. After carrying out two studies using the Delphi methodology, the English community decided to change the term SLI to DLD (language development disorder) and this change has opened a new theoretical paradigm that has a direct impact on professional practice. Current research on the different dimensions of SLI / DLD allows us to answer questions that we had already asked ourselves, but this time with new answers: What is DLD? How do we detect, evaluate and diagnose it? What dimensions beyond language should we consider? How can we intervene to improve their communication and quality of life? https://symposium.uoc.edu/56267/detai...
