The American romantic comedy – which was released in 1991 – was based on Fannie Flagg's 1987 novel (Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe). It was first released in Hungarian under the title Ártós élni, and the second time as Súlt zöld paramaksad. The film was directed by Jon Avnet and was nominated for an Oscar in two categories. The film takes place in two time periods. The story, which takes place in Alabama in the 1920s and 1930s, is told in the context of another story set in the 1980s. The film begins in the 1980s, when Evelyn, a middle-aged woman struggling with her weight and personal problems, meets Ninny, an elderly woman, in a hospital. This storyline frames the previous events, as Evelyn's repeated visits give Ninny the opportunity to tell the story of her youth. What she says changes Evelyn's life as well.
