The story of Jesus. Biblical approach The historical story of Jesus is known to us above all from the four canonical gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, which were written between 66 and 95 AD; we can certainly also read some apocryphal gospels, written in all probability from the middle of the second century AD, but these do not seem to add much new information. Therefore, the richest "source" we have available to reconstruct the "story of Jesus" is the story of four evangelists who, however, did not intend to create a "historical" account: these are, in fact, narratives that reread the facts "in the light of faith", within a believing community and for believers or, at least, for people who were questioning their choice of faith: what historical reliability can such stories, so "theologically" connoted, have? The consideration of the specific genre of “gospel”, of its literary characteristics, as well as of the historical context in which it was probably born, offers the possibility of understanding how these texts “ask” to be read, which questions they can answer and which questions, instead, they leave open, without the possibility of an exhaustive answer. Specifically, the rediscovery of the gospels as “stories”, with some of the implications highlighted by recent studies in narratology, help us to relish the fruit that they offer to readers of all times.
